Radisson Hotel Group sets a new benchmark with Verified Net Zero Hotels powered by 100% renewable energy

Radisson Hotel Group is setting a new benchmark for sustainable stays by ensuring that many of its properties are powered fully or in part by renewable energy. Hotels such as Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Gran Canaria Mogan, Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Malta Golden Sands, Radisson Blu Resort Lanzarote, and Radisson Blu Resort, Fiji Denarau Island have maximized the electrification of their operations and source electricity from renewable sources, reducing their use of fossil fuels.

Building on this achievement, Radisson Hotel Group has taken a pioneering role by converting two of its existing properties into Verified Net Zero Hotels. The approach starts with fully eliminating fossil fuel use and achieving 100% renewable energy, followed by a maximum reduction of the operational emissions. This article features the journey of the first ever Verified Net Zero hotels and detailing how both hotels - the Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, A Verified Net Zero Hotel, and Radisson RED Oslo City Centre, A Verified Net Zero Hotel – reached 100% renewable energy use.

The Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, A Verified Net Zero Hotel, completely took out gas as an energy source and implemented an air-to-water heat pump, a highly efficient system that uses air to primarily produce hot water for hotel operations. It also electrified the kitchen by removing gas cooking equipment and replacing it with electrical appliances, including cookware. In addition, the hotel signed a renewable electricity contract to ensure that all power is sourced exclusively from renewable electricity sources. These measures fully reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions fully eliminated to ZERO.

The Radisson RED Oslo City Centre, a Verified Net Zero hotel, is a BREEAM In-Use certified property connected to the city’s District Heating network..

Thanks to the ambitious sustainability targets and actions of the City District Heating Network, Hafslund Celsio, the heating runs 98% on renewable sources.

The renewable sources of the city heating network are amongst others excess energy from sewage, data centers, and waste management, as well as biofuels and heat pumps. The remaining share of energy was offset through nature-based carbon removal certificates that promote regenerative agriculture. Additionally, 100% of the electricity is supplied via hydropower, a renewable source. 

The transformation of these two properties demonstrates that achieving Verified Net Zero status is possible today. By prioritizing renewable energy and innovative solutions, Radisson Hotel Group sets a benchmark for the hospitality industry and inspires others to join the journey towards a sustainable future.
