45 Years of Dedication: Johan Westberg’s Journey with Radisson Hotel Group

Back in the late 1970s, Johan was intrigued by the world of hospitality. “I was curious and had heard so many good things about the hotel where I applied for a job,” he recalls. That curiosity soon blossomed into a lifelong career. He began as a Bellboy, quickly moved to Reception, and eventually took on an opportunity that would change his career trajectory—IT.

When Johan saw his hotel being computerized in the early ’80s, he was fascinated. With management’s encouragement and training, he transitioned into the role of IT Manager. That step led him on a journey that included:

• Supporting his first hotel opening in Malmö, Sweden
• Taking on a Systems Consultant role at the company base in Oslo
• Relocating to Brussels as RHG expanded globally
• Managing IT installations for over 100 hotels worldwide
• Shifting focus to networking and infrastructure, now based in Copenhagen

Today, Johan is part of our Infrastructure and Networking team, working alongside what he describes as “some great people.” His career reflects RHG’s commitment to nurturing talent, providing opportunities, and embracing change.

When asked about his most memorable moments, Johan smiles: “There are so many. Fantastic locations, people, events… but hotel openings stand out.” For Johan, there’s nothing quite like seeing a construction site transform into a fully functioning hotel. “It’s a feeling of pride and achievement.”

He also shares a powerful and deeply personal experience: during a business trip, a colleague collapsed at an airport. Johan administered CPR and, with the help of a defibrillator and bystanders, helped save his colleague’s life. “It was intense, emotional—but I was proud I could help. We still talk regularly.”

So, what makes RHG a great place to work? According to Johan:

“We have a fantastic product. Our guests visit us because they enjoy what we offer—and it’s great to be part of delivering those enjoyable moments.”

It’s not just about technology or systems—it’s about people, passion, and purpose.

After four and a half decades with RHG, Johan’s advice to young professionals is grounded in experience, “Work in different departments if you can. Learn as much as possible. If you’re not in a hotel role, go and visit a property. Learn the business from the ground up.”

That hands-on knowledge, he says, is invaluable—and it opens the door to incredible career growth.
