The Ultimate Guide To Explore Marseille

For the best experience in Marseille, consider visiting during the off-season. While July and August are the peak months, they bring larger crowds not to mention the heat. For a more comfortable and enjoyable trip, we recommend traveling in late spring or early autumn. 

Three nights in Marseille should give you plenty of time to see the sights. However, if you want to explore Calanques National Park we’d recommend four nights; you’ll want to spend at least a day there as it is vast and beautiful!

Vieux Port

The Vieux Port (Old Port) has been the heart of Marseille since the Ancient Greeks established it thousands of years ago. It’s a lively spot, rich in history with landmarks like the Saint-Ferréol Church, alongside modern additions such as the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM). Gateway to the Îles du Frioul, known for their natural beauty, and the historic Château d'If, the port is always bustling with activity.

Just south of Marseille, the Calanques National Park is a must for nature lovers. A calanque is a Mediterranean cove or limestone fjord, offering stunning beauty. The park’s pebble and sandy beaches are perfect for swimming or relaxing. One of the most popular calanques is Sormiou, known for its clear waters and cliffs, making it a favourite for hikers, swimmers and adventure seekers. Boat tours also allow you to discover the vibrant underwater world, from sea urchins to anemones and even octopuses.

Just west of the Vieux Port is the gorgeous fishing outpost of Vallon des Auffes. While it might not be as busy as it once was, there’s still plenty of picturesque architecture here, including an impressive, 60m-tall stone bridge spanning the port. It’s a great, central spot for a quick dip in the sea soak up the atmosphere and take in some great views.

Le Panier is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Marseille, and probably the most photogenic. Full of bustling cafes and restaurants, boutiques, and artists’ studios, it’s the ideal place for breakfast or lunch, or to find a gift for a loved one - or yourself! Don’t miss a visit to the Vieille Charité, a magnificent old hospital that is now a museum dedicated to Marseille’s history.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking Marseille, Notre-Dame de la Garde is an iconic basilica and one of the city’s most beloved landmarks. Known as the "Good Mother," it has been a symbol of protection and hope for sailors and fishermen for centuries.
