Riyadh city guide

Plan a Riyadh stay with mud-brick palaces, souqs, museums, Najdi food, desert cliffs, and local tips.

 Best times to visit Riyadh

Season

Spring (March–April)

Summer (May–September)

Autumn (October–November)

Winter (December–February)

Best for

At-Turaif visits, souq browsing, museums, wadi walks

Museums, malls, indoor dining, shaded wadi walks

Riyadh Season, Noor Riyadh, Diriyah, outdoor dining

Edge of the World, wadi hikes, outdoor sightseeing

Travel Tip

Plan outdoor sights for mornings and evenings, and expect occasional light rain.

Stay hydrated, avoid the midday sun, and save outdoor plans for early mornings or evenings.

Check Riyadh Season and Noor Riyadh dates early, since event schedules change each year.

Bring a warm layer for cooler evenings, and set out early for the Edge of the World.

Some travelers come for mud-brick palaces and museum galleries, while others would rather taste Najdi dishes, head out to desert cliffs, or browse contemporary art against a modern skyline. Pick the style that fits your trip and blend in the rest at your own pace.

History seekers

Visit Al Masmak Palace and the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, then walk At-Turaif.

Trace the story

Najdi food lovers

Try jareesh, qursan, and matazeez, share Saudi coffee with dates, and dine at Bujairi Terrace.

Savor Najdi flavors

Modern art explorers

Browse JAX District galleries, seasonal Noor Riyadh light art, KAFD, and Sky Bridge views.

See modern Riyadh

Desert adventurers

Hike at the Edge of the World, then cycle or stroll the shaded paths of Wadi Hanifah.

Head for the desert

These day plans group Riyadh's sights by area, so you spend more time at palaces, museums, souqs, and terraces and less time crossing the city. The one-day route pairs the historic center with a visit to Diriyah, while two days leave room for the modern skyline and Wadi Hanifah. A third day heads out to the Edge of the World.

Heat shapes the rhythm of a visit for much of the year, so keep outdoor stops for mornings and evenings and save middays for museums and long lunches. Check opening hours before you set off, since some sites close on certain days.

Mud-brick palaces and Saudi history

Riyadh tells Saudi Arabia's story through mud-brick palaces and museum galleries.

In the center, Al Masmak Palace, linked to the Kingdom's unification, shows its courtyard, well, four conical towers, and wooden gate. In the Al-Murabba District, the King Abdulaziz Historical Center holds Al Murabba Palace and the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, whose six galleries run from the region's earliest history to the First and Second Saudi States.

In Diriyah, At-Turaif, the UNESCO-listed first capital of the Saudi dynasty, rewards a 2–3 hour visit to its historic streets, restored mud-brick buildings, Salwa Palace, and galleries.

Najdi food and Saudi coffee culture

Riyadh is a rewarding place to discover Najdi cooking. Look for jareesh, a cracked-wheat dish, qursan, thin bread soaked in vegetable gravy, and matazeez. Kleija and masabeeb are other Najdi dishes, and kabsa, spiced rice with meat or chicken, is worth trying too.

Saudi coffee sits at the heart of hospitality. In the Najd region it's spiced with cardamom and saffron, served with dates, and offered with the right hand.

In Diriyah, Bujairi Terrace gathers restaurants and cafés in a Najdi heritage setting. During Riyadh Season, Boulevard World brings together restaurants, cafés, and cuisines from around the world.

Contemporary art and modern Riyadh

Contemporary Riyadh sits comfortably alongside its heritage. In Diriyah, JAX District has turned more than 100 former warehouses into exhibition spaces, studios, and galleries, and it has hosted the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale.

Noor Riyadh, described as the world's largest light art festival, brings dozens of large-scale light installations to the city during each edition.

For a modern skyline, visit KAFD, home to the PIF Tower and the KAFD Grand Mosque, or ride up to the Sky Bridge at Kingdom Centre, 300 meters above the city, for panoramic views by day or night. The metro links both areas.

Desert cliffs and green wadi trails

Dramatic desert scenery lies within a day trip of Riyadh. The Edge of the World sits about 100 kilometers from the city at the far end of the Tuwaiq range, where the land climbs to 1,131 meters and fossilized shells recall an ancient sea. Cooler winter days, sunrise, and sunset are especially rewarding times for hiking and wide views over valleys and desert, so plan a half day and set out early.

Closer in, Wadi Hanifah runs about 13.4 kilometers, with greenery, shade, rest areas, parking, and paths for walking, cycling, and horse riding. It forms part of the wider Sports Boulevard and is popular with families, especially in summer.

Riyadh travel questions, answered before you go

  • Can I pay by card in Riyadh, or do I need cash?

The local currency is the Saudi riyal. Contactless bank cards and Apple Pay are accepted at Riyadh Metro gates, but payment options vary by venue, so carry some riyals as a backup.

  • Do I need a visa to visit Riyadh?

Entry rules depend on your nationality. Depending on your passport, you may be able to apply for a tourist e-visa online or on arrival at Saudi international airports, but rules change, so check official guidance before booking.

  • What should I wear in Riyadh?

Choose loose, modest clothing that covers your elbows and reaches below the knees. Women are not required to wear an abaya or cover their hair. Light, breathable fabrics help in the summer heat.

  • When is the best time to visit Riyadh?

November to March is the coolest stretch for sightseeing. Summers from May to September are very hot, so plan outdoor visits for early mornings and evenings, and check Riyadh Season dates if events are a priority.

  • How many days do I need in Riyadh?

Two days covers At-Turaif, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, Al Masmak Palace, Souq Al Zal, and the Sky Bridge. A third day leaves time for the Edge of the World or extra evenings during Riyadh Season.

  • What is the best way to get around Riyadh?

Riyadh Metro runs six lines and 85 stations from 6 am to midnight, and city buses use the same tickets. Pay with a darb card, the darb app, or a contactless bank card at the gate.

  • How do I get from the airport to central Riyadh?

The Riyadh Metro Yellow Line has stations at Terminals 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 of King Khalid International Airport, and links to the wider network, including KAFD. Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem run 24 hours a day from arrivals.

  • Do I need to tip in Riyadh?

A tip of 10–15% is usual in restaurants when no service charge is included. Taxi drivers are usually tipped around 10–15% of the fare.

  • Can I drink alcohol in Riyadh?

No. Alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia, and bringing it in, possessing it, or drinking it in public can bring severe penalties. Evenings out center on cafés, restaurants, Saudi coffee, and events instead.

  • What food should I try first in Riyadh?

Start with Najdi dishes such as jareesh, qursan, kleija, and matazeez, add kabsa, then try Saudi coffee spiced with cardamom and saffron and served with dates.
