Giving an Arabic perspective on contemporary trends and themes in art, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art showcases Arabic art exhibitions and installations from Arabic artists as well as international art from global artists.
Previously featured artists, among others, include world-known Chinese artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, the internationally known Iranian visual artist, Shirin Neshat, and Adel Abdessemed, a French-Algerian conceptual artist who is also internationally esteemed. The Sheikh's private collection
Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art was founded by Sheikh Hassan Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani in 2010, and is the only institution dedicated to Arab modern art in the Middle East and North Africa. Sheikh Hassan is an artist, collector, researcher, and educator in Modern Art from the Arab world as well as other Asian countries. He has dedicated his life to Arab modern art. He started his private collection in 1986, which now includes more than 6,000 art pieces, mainly from Qatari, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi artists, and covers all phases of modern art in the Middle East from the 1840s to the present.
The museum is placed near Qatar National Convention Centre – QNCC and Doha Education City west of Doha city center.
