Aquarium Biarritz

Want a closer look at some aquatic species? Head over to the Biarritz Aquarium, the perfect choice for a great family day out when you're visiting Biarritz.

A French emblem

Since opening its doors back in 1933, the Biarritz Aquarium has been a significant landmark of the city. The Art Deco building is home to a variety of species from jellyfish to grey seals. Plus, it is the only place in France where you can see hammerhead sharks.

As you enter the aquarium, located just across the Rocher de la Vierge promenade, you can start exploring the wonders of the Bay of Biscay and view 20 aquariums teeming with life. Gaze upon the playful octopi, swimming seahorses, intriguing conger eels, and many other interesting species.

Explore the different floors

After exploring the ground floor, head to the 1st floor for the cetacean gallery. Admire skeletons and reconstructed models of killer whales, dolphins, and even a blue whale—the size of the skull is impressive! In the Delord room and Fisheries room, you can learn more about the different boats and tools used by fishermen from the Basque region.

The 2nd floor is a treat for those who love seals and turtles. In the Turtle Grotto, watch the green turtle and loggerhead turtle, and catch sight of turbots, undulate rays, and more. Massive panoramic windows ensure you can relax and enjoy the views of the grey seals swimming and playing right in front of your eyes. The 3rd floor terrace allows you to observe the seals from the outdoors while you also take in panoramic ocean views.

Temporary exhibits are often on display, so there is always something new to discover. You can even peruse the gift shop located on the 4th floor.

The main attraction

The highlight of the aquarium is on the 3rd floor where the hammerhead sharks and seals reside. Watch the seals from the terrace as they swim in a pool overlooking the ocean, and don't miss watching their feedings, which happen twice a day.

Right around the corner, check out the shark aquarium. From a safe range behind thick glass, visitors can observe how the fierce sharks swim in the clear waters. As the only place in France where you can see hammerhead sharks, the Biarritz Aquarium is a unique attraction.

Preserving marine species

The aquarium is about more than just allowing you to gaze at pretty animals; it is also about telling the story of the area and preserving marine life.

Take a look behind the scenes of the aquarium and see how the team takes care of the animals, grows coral reefs, and more. A large team of biologists, technicians, and animal keepers work hard to ensure the animals get the royal treatment they deserve.

Good to know

There is also a touch pool where you can interact with jellyfish and other aquatic inhabitants—the perfect entertainment for little ones. The aquarium displays are all in French, but audio guides are available in English, Spanish, German, French, and Basque. This accommodating aquarium has something for everyone.
