Puff-Puff, an African must-try snack
Puff-puff as it is called in Sierra Leone, Anglophone (English) Cameroon and Nigeria, is a traditional snack that takes different shapes and names throughout Africa. For instance, it is called bofrot in Ghana, mikate in Congo, Beinye in Francophone (French) Cameroonian cuisine, or kala in Liberia. The prominence of this delicacy stretches even to the Eastern and Southern parts of the continent, where it is mostly known as mandazi. The highly addictive puff-puffs are made of dough containing flour, yeast, sugar, butter, salt, water, and eggs (which are optional), and then deep fried in vegetable oil to an irresistible golden-brown color. After frying, puff-puffs can be rolled in sugar or in spices, such as cinnamon, vanilla, or nutmeg. Sometimes, puff-puffs served with a fruit dip such as strawberry or raspberry. However, they are best enjoyed on their own or with coffee and obviously ice cream.
