Venice city guide

Explore Venice, from canals and basilicas to museums, lagoon islands, cicchetti, festivals, and local tips.

Best time to visit Venice

Season

Spring (March–May)

Summer (June–August)

Autumn (September–November)

Winter (December–February)

Best for

Mild walks, museums, lagoon islands, fewer crowds

Festa del Redentore, Biennale, lagoon trips

Festa della Salute, museums, shoulder-season calm

Carnival, quieter streets, museums, bàcari

Travel tip

Book timed entry for St Mark's Basilica ahead, and pack layers for changeable days.

Carry a refillable bottle for the public fountains, and plan indoor visits for midday.

Check the official tide forecast, since high water becomes more likely from autumn.

Book early for Carnival, and confirm the current year's dates on the official site.

One visitor might spend a whole morning with Venetian painting, while another takes a vaporetto out to Murano and Burano. Pick the styles that suit your pace and combine them freely, since Venice rewards slow and curious days.

Art lovers

See the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Ca' Rezzonico, and Ca' Pesaro.

Discover the art

Food lovers

Share cicchetti in Cannaregio's bàcari, then try sarde in saor with an aperitivo.

Taste Venice

Island explorers

Ride out to Murano, Burano, and Torcello for glass, lace, and lagoon history.

Explore the lagoon

Spiritual travelers

Visit St Mark's Basilica, Santa Maria della Salute, and Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.

Find sacred Venice

Festival goers

Time your trip for Carnival, the Festa del Redentore, the Biennale, or the Festa della Salute.

Plan for festivals

These day plans group nearby sights, so you spend more time exploring and less time crossing the city. Narrow lanes and vaporetto connections both take time in Venice, so a realistic pace makes each day more enjoyable.

Book timed entries such as St Mark's Basilica ahead where you can, and leave space for a bàcaro stop, a quiet church, or an unplanned walk along a canal. Follow the city's etiquette as you go, walking on the right and in single file through the narrowest lanes.

Venetian painting, modern art, and museum enthusiasts

Venice gives art lovers far more than one gallery day. Start at the Gallerie dell'Accademia, home to the largest collection of Venetian painting, where Giorgione's The Tempest, Titian's Pietà, Carpaccio's St Ursula cycle, and Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi are among its highlights, across 37 halls. Check which works are on view before you go.

Then cross to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection for 20th-century European and American art in Peggy Guggenheim's former home on the Grand Canal. Ca' Rezzonico and Ca' Pesaro add more museum options, and in years when the Biennale Arte runs, check its program for contemporary exhibitions.

Food, wine bars, and small-plates lovers

Venetian food culture comes alive in the bàcari, the traditional taverns where locals meet for an aperitivo and a few cicchetti. Cannaregio is a good place to begin, since the city's tourism office points to its bàcari as a favorite for a Venetian aperitivo.

Look for sarde in saor, a classic Venetian sardine dish that takes center stage during the Festa del Redentore in July. If you sit down for a full meal, expect a per-person cover charge on the bill, and refill your water bottle at the public fountains between stops.

Lagoon islands, glass, and lace wanderers

A day on the lagoon shows a different side of Venice. On Murano, the Glass Museum occupies the former residence of the bishops of Torcello and holds the world's largest historical collection of Murano glass, with pieces from the 15th to the 20th century.

Continue to Burano, where the Lace Museum traces five centuries of Venetian lace-making through around 200 original pieces. Torcello, which the city's tourism office calls the original Venice, is home to the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, and a St Mark's Basilica ticket also covers a visit there within six months.

Basilicas and sacred art admirers

Sacred Venice rewards an unhurried visit. St Mark's Basilica is visited by timed slot, with the Pala d'Oro, museum, and Loggia dei Cavalli as separate areas, and shoulders and knees must be covered inside.

Across the water, Baldassare Longhena's Santa Maria della Salute was built between 1631 and 1687 in thanks for the end of the plague, and it holds works by Titian and Tintoretto's The Wedding at Cana. Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, built by Franciscan friars between 1236 and 1338, adds another peaceful stop. A St Mark's Basilica ticket also opens dozens of city churches within six months.

Carnival, festivals, and feast days explorers

Venice's calendar gives many trips a clear focus. Carnival brings winter celebrations to the city, and the 2027 edition runs January 23–February 9, 2027, according to the official Carnival site.

In July, the Festa del Redentore brings Venetians out onto boats and terraces with sarde in saor. Every November 21, the Festa della Salute sees a bridge of boats built across the Grand Canal to Santa Maria della Salute. In Biennale years, art or architecture exhibitions add another draw, so check official dates for every event before you book.
