Prague city guide

Local tips for exploring Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, city towers, concerts, Czech food, and family days.

When to visit Prague

Season

Spring (March–May)

Summer (June–August)

Autumn (September–November)

Winter (December–February)

Best for

Castle gardens, tower views, Saturday markets

Late zoo visits, sunny days, riverside markets

Autumn color, opera, concerts, museums

Christmas markets, concerts, museums, fewer crowds

Travel tip

Pack layers, since March and April can still feel chilly.

Expect peak crowds, so start early at Prague Castle, whose grounds open before the buildings.

Bring a warm layer as the season cools, and keep a museum or concert as an indoor backup.

Dress warmly, check holiday opening hours, and save time for December's Christmas markets.

Some travelers come for the castle and the old streets, while others plan their days around an opera ticket, a hearty Czech lunch, or a morning at the zoo with the children. Choose the styles that suit your trip and combine them across your stay, since each one links to more ideas below.

Castle and Old Town

Cross Charles Bridge to Prague Castle, then see the Old Town Hall and Josefov's synagogues.

Explore the castle

Czech food and beer

Try svíčková, goulash, and Pilsner Urquell, then shop Saturday stalls at Náplavka Farmers' Market.

Taste Prague

Concerts and opera

Book opera at the Estates Theatre or State Opera, or a concert in Smetana Hall.

Find a concert

Views and green spaces

Climb Petřín Lookout Tower, explore Vyšehrad's park, and wander the Royal Garden at Prague Castle.

See the views

Days out with kids

Pet animals at Prague Zoo, watch the Astronomical Clock, and visit the Children's Museum.

Plan a family day

These day plans group Prague's sights by area, so you spend less time crossing town and more time enjoying it.

The first covers the Old Town, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle in one full day. The second spreads the same ground across two days and adds Josefov, the Clementinum, and Petřín. The third heads out to Vyšehrad, the riverside market, and Prague Zoo.

Leave room for a tower climb, a café stop, or an unplanned detour. Some sights run guided tours at set times, including the Clementinum and the Old Town Hall interiors, so check schedules and book ahead where you can.

History and heritage in Prague's old center

Prague Castle is the natural place to begin. Founded in the 9th century and a symbol of the Czech state for more than a thousand years, the complex spreads across 45 hectares of courtyards, palaces, and churches, including St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and Golden Lane.

Cross Charles Bridge, built between 1357 and 1402 and lined with 30 statues of saints, to reach the Old Town Hall, whose Astronomical Clock dates from 1410. Nearby, the Jewish Museum in Prague brings together four synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov. Save Vyšehrad, a 10th-century hillfort, for a quieter afternoon.

Where to taste Czech food and beer

Czech cooking is hearty, so arrive hungry. Start with svíčková na smetaně, goulash with bread dumplings, or vepřo-knedlo-zelo, then pair your meal with a Czech beer such as Pilsner Urquell or Budvar.

On Saturday mornings from February to December, Náplavka Farmers' Market fills the riverbank with stalls selling Czech farm produce, cheeses, bread, beer, wine, and cider. For an Art Nouveau setting, the Municipal House has its own café and Pilsner restaurant beside the Powder Gate.

Prague's opera houses and concert halls

Music runs deep in Prague. Mozart conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre in 1787, and the opera is still staged there today. The National Theatre and State Opera add more evenings of opera.

For concerts, Smetana Hall in the Art Nouveau Municipal House is home to the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK. Book ahead for popular evenings, and leave time for a drink or dinner nearby.

High viewpoints and green escapes

Prague is a city to see from above. Petřín Lookout Tower, built in 1891 as a loose copy of the Eiffel Tower, stands on Petřín hill at 327 meters above sea level, and an elevator spares you the stairs. In the Old Town, the Old Town Hall tower gallery and the Clementinum's 68-meter Astronomical Tower bring you closer to the rooftops, while the National Museum's dome looks out over Wenceslas Square.

For green space, wander the Royal Garden at Prague Castle, or head to Vyšehrad, where the park is free to enter all year.

Easy days out with children

Prague has plenty to keep younger travelers busy. At Prague Zoo in Troja, children can pet and feed animals at the Children's Zoo, play in the Bororo Reserve, and ride the children's tram, and arriving by boat makes the trip part of the fun.

Back in the center, the Astronomical Clock's hourly apostle procession is an easy first stop, and the Petřín Mirror Maze pairs well with a trip up Petřín Lookout Tower.

On a rainy day, the Children's Museum in the National Museum's New Building is linked by an underground corridor to the Historical Building.
