Volvo Ocean Race – an oceanic week in Gothenburg

Did you miss the Volvo Ocean Race? It happens every 3 years, so plan well in advance and check back in with us in 2021 to attend the event when it hits Gothenburg once again !

It's time again for Gothenburg to welcome one of the most popular events the world has to offer. After eight months at sea and stops in eleven different ports, the Volvo Ocean Race reaching Gothenburg in June for the second to last stop before the finish line in The Hague. Come and join us as we celebrate their last leg. A large crowd is expected to welcome the sailors in the heart of Gothenburg, with a week-long festival open to everyone at the event area in Frihamnen from June 14-21.

Of course Radisson Blu is here to add its own touch to the celebration for both sailors and event goers alike. Radisson Blu will be located right in Race Village where they'll be telling our story about travels over land and sea as well as our own journey with our two iconic hotels in Gothenburg.

Lisbon

Since 2014, Lisbon has been home to the Volvo Ocean Race. Known for being the starting point for Vasco de Gama on his voyage to India and many other Portuguese exploration in the 15th and 16th century, the city has developed a culture for the ocean that is still present today. On your way to the marina from the Radisson Blu Lisbon, have a look at the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument located in the Belem district: it will give you the sense of pride in the city today. Lisbon is also home to the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard, a permanent facility where teams of boat building experts work round the clock to prepare the fleet for the spectacular race. Open to the public, the boatyard provides a unique insight into the complexity of the race while honoring the history of the third largest port in Europe.

Cape Town

South Africa is known as a popular sports destination. And adopting an active cosmopolitan lifestyle is inevitable as Cape Town has so many offerings, including a natural wonder of the world Table Mountain. In November 2017, the V&A Waterfront was the center of attention when the Volvo Ocean Race fleet arrived in the city. And the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Cape Town is situated close to the Waterfront, so it's a perfect place to spot the boats' arrival.
