Let’s do a thought experiment

Close your eyes and try to visualize your dream meeting. Whether this comes easily or you’re drawing a blank may have a lot to do with your environment. Are you in a busy office buzzing with work chatter? Sitting at a kitchen table that doubles as your home office? Before you go beating yourself up for a lack of imagination, consider whether you’re distracted by all the sensory input from your surroundings. 
Let's try that exercise again in a completely different setting. Imagine you’re being led through a series of visualization exercises in a dark black room. Your colleagues are there but you can’t see them. Group brainstorming will take place later on, but first it’s just you, following specific prompts designed to help you and the other participants transcend current challenges. Attendees are encouraged to quietly jot down their reflections as the exercise progresses. Then, having passed through several ever deepening stages of ideation, the room gradually lightens up, slowly revealing infinity patterns. In a final crescendo, a visual rendition of each participant’s aspirations appears, with the images serving as a basis for a group discussion on the future of meetings and events.
