Then chill out, taking a boat to the lovely Lerins Islands for a leisurely swim or a snorkel. Moving on, plan a stop in the charming village of Jouques during your 59km drive to Marseille. Soak up the fabulously heady fragrance at Moulin Saint Vincent, the area’s last working lavender and essential oil distillery - which offers fascinating free tours during August.

Urban edge and stylish elegance coexist in newly regenerated Marseille. This former poor city of the Provençal coast seems reborn since its 2013 stint as the European Capital of Culture and the launch of the city’s brilliant MuCEM, a unique museum dedicated to the Mediterranean. Explore the vibrant Vieux Port, the ancient Panier quarter - with its cool boutiques and the Joliette area around the cathedral.
