Things to do in Croatia: Discover Split

Split’s ancient origins began as a Greek colony, but it was the Roman Emperor Diocletian who founded what has become the basis of the city we see today. The magnificent Diocletian's Palace, founded in the 4th century, is Split's top tourist attraction and one of the top sights to see in Croatia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most impressive remaining Roman monuments anywhere in the world. 

The city offers a mix of cultures and architecture due to its conquests and rulers. French, Venetian, and Roman influences shape its cobblestone streets, and its ancient ruins, and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in Europe.

We’ve already mentioned the number one historical interest in Split, but what else is there to see and do? Quite simply, loads. 

The city’s promenade, the Riva, is a pedestrian space bursting with restaurants and cafes – perfect for a morning coffee or an evening drink with friends. 

Then there’s the Old Town and its charming artisan shops, designer boutiques, and marble-tiled plaza and square. Marmontova Street is a must-visit for any keen shopper. 

For the more energetic, there’s Marjan: the 170-meter-high hill covered in cypress and pine trees that offers a stunning view of the harbor and the old city. 

Then for culture lovers, Split offers a series of museums, galleries, and the National Theatre of Croatia, all with a full program of events and exhibitions spread across the year.  

Finally, you can’t talk about the sights to see in Croatia without mentioning the iconic Game of Thrones. Split is no exception. Klis Fortress was used as the filming location for the fictional city of Meereen, so it’s one to put on your ‘must-see list’ if you’re a fan.

Split is a lively and vibrant beach destination. There’s a beach to suit every preference, from relaxing in the sun to high-adrenaline watersports. There’s even a dog-friendly beach for you to enjoy with the whole family. What’s more, for the really adventurous, you can enjoy cliff jumping into the stunning turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. 

Bacvice is the most popular beach in Split and is close to the Old Town. Bene Beach enjoys the shaded backdrop of a pine forest whilst Znjan Beach is great for kids. 

Split is also the ideal spot to catch a ferry to travel on to other Dalmatian Islands. You can explore the beautiful beaches of Hvar, Brac, and Bisevo as these islands can be reached easily.

Known for its lively music scene, Split is host to many festivals throughout the year. Some are more geared to locals, but many are aimed at an international audience. 

Ultra Europe is the largest music festival in Croatia and takes place in Split every July. Tens of thousands of music lovers from across the world attend this week of electronic music and entertainment featuring renowned artists and DJs. 

The Split Summer Festival is held from mid-July to mid-August. Here, you’ll get the chance to enjoy dance and music performances in open-air theaters and different venues. Opera, jazz, and ballet are all on the program. 

In mid-August, The Days of Diocletian Festival celebrates Split’s Roman heritage with costumed performers, exhibitions, and traditional food. 

Then there’s the Festival of Flowers held in May, the Mediterranean Film Festival in June, and the Split Carnival in February, to name just a few.

You won’t go hungry, that’s for sure. Places to eat in Split range from small family-run taverns and street food vendors to elegant harbor-side restaurants.  

As a coastal city, it’s no surprise to see the influence of the sea on local dishes. Grilled meat, fish, or seafood with sides like Swiss chard are popular, as are black risottos with squids and squid ink.  

Other local favorites include a baby beef stew with gnocchi called pasticada, stuffed bell peppers with mashed potatoes, a savory pie called soparnik, and the old staple of meatballs in a tomato sauce. 

Split makes a great base for your trip to Croatia. Once it may have been seen as just a gateway to the region and a stopover to other islands, now it is a destination in its own right.
