Flavors, Views & Culture: A Taste of Heritage with Radisson Collection, Cape Town

One of the most immersive parts of the trip was diving into Cape Town’s local food culture. A visit to the Oranjezicht City Farm Market, just a short walk from the hotel, gave a glimpse into everyday life. It’s the perfect spot to pick up handmade goods or simply sit back and enjoy a strong Cape Town coffee and a local treat.

One of the most unique experiences in the region is the wild food foraging experience with Veld and Sea. We walked through indigenous herb gardens and along mountain paths, guided by a local chef and forager who shared her knowledge about local edible plants. We picked ingredients ourselves and later turned them into a delicious, nature-inspired lunch. It was not only educational but also a calming experience that truly captured the essence of the region.

Just a short drive from the city, the Franschhoek Valley offers some of the most scenic and historic estates in the country. A standout was Boschendal Wine Estate, one of South Africa’s oldest farms. Surrounded by mountains and vineyards, it’s a haven of good taste that delivers the perfect blend of indulgence and serenity.

A short ride from the hotel lies Bo-Kaap, one of Cape Town’s most iconic neighborhoods. With its brightly colored houses and cobbled streets, Bo-Kaap is the heart of Cape Malay culture — a community with roots in the enslaved peoples brought from Southeast Asia in the 17th century.

Through a walking and cooking tour, I explored this district’s rich history and vibrant flavors. In a local home, I learned how to prepare traditional Cape Malay curry, fold samosas, and mix the perfect spice blend. It wasn’t just about the food — it was about community, resilience, and preserving heritage through generations.

To end the “Taste of Heritage” journey in style, I spent the evening at GOLD Restaurant, an experience that tells a story with every bite. Through a multi-course dinner paired with live dance performances, I got to taste dishes from across the African continent. From Ethiopian lentil stew to Mozambican peri-peri chicken, the menu celebrated Africa’s vast and varied food heritage in a way that was festive, educational, and truly memorable.

While the culinary experiences were at the heart of this trip, Cape Town’s natural wonders made the journey complete. Kayaking along the Atlantic coast brought me up close with marine life and provided a fresh perspective of the city’s skyline. A ride to the top of Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, offered panoramic views I’ll never forget. Setting sail on a magical Sunset Cruise to end your day, where the ocean sparkled under the golden sky, is something you simply have to experience.
