Discover Reykjavik's LGBT scene

Known for its eclectic architecture, lively cultural scene and spectacular natural setting, Reykjavik is a small but endlessly fascinating capital city. From the otherworldly beauty of the northern lights and soothing thermal hot springs, to an exciting range of world-class museums, art galleries, festivals, gigs and countless outdoor activities, there's no shortage of things to see and do in the Icelandic capital.

The city is also known for its vibrant LGBT scene, with a warm, welcoming vibe that makes it particularly appealing to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender travellers from over the world. LGBT rights are well-protected under Icelandic law, and there are plenty of gay-friendly bars and other businesses in the city, not to mention the spectacular annual Pride celebrations.

Reykjavik is also home to Pink Iceland, an award-winning travel agency that specialises in planning gay-friendly holidays and weddings in this northern country. We spoke to co-owner Hannes Pálsson to find out more about the company and the LGBT scene in Reykjavik.

Tell us about Pink Iceland and its philosophy

"Pink Iceland is a labour of love. It is owned and operated by two lesbians and a gay man, and we work for and with the LGBT community to create unforgettable travel experiences and weddings. While our focus may be on this niche market, our services are open to everyone with an open mind and an open heart, regardless of their sexual orientation. We see ourselves as pseudo-ambassadors for our small community here in Iceland, so we try to put a lot of thought into how we portray life and what we do here."

Would you consider Reykjavik a LGBT-friendly city?

"In short, yes. Reykjavik is better than many other big cities when it comes to acceptance of gays and lesbians. We still have some work to do for other folks who identify as a part of the queer alphabet, but in general Reykjavik and Iceland are safe and welcoming for all. This boils down to the fact that we've had a visible and strong community since the National LGBT Association was formed in 1978."

What about Iceland more generally?

"Iceland has transformed itself from being one of Europe's poorest and most underdeveloped countries, to one of its more prosperous, culturally rich, liberal and gay-friendly states. It may have been a quiet revolution, but a revolution nonetheless. When the Icelandic LGBT organisation was founded in 1978 against the backdrop of general homophobia, the founders could only dream of a Pride Parade attracting up to 100,000 locals, gay bars and a travel agency servicing a multitude of LGBT clientele wishing to visit from around the world."

For tourists from the LGBT community considering a trip to Reykjavik, what would you tell them to convince them to visit?

"We would tell them that Iceland has some of the most awe-inspiring nature you'll ever see, and some of the loveliest people you'll ever meet. We'd also tell them that they'll feel perfectly safe traveling here. We'd also try to convince them to work with a local expert (us!) in organising their trip to make the absolute most of it."

Which areas do you recommend for day trips out of Reykjavik?

"The southern part of Iceland is the most visited area. It has everything that makes you fall in love with the country, including erupting geysers at Strokkur, the breath-taking Gullfoss waterfall, black sandy beaches at Reynisfjara, the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, uninterrupted views for miles, greenery, the Sólheimajökull glacier, lovely people and amazing food. The thing is, the rest of the country also has examples of all of the above, and then some. It's hard to pick favourites as they all have different things to love about them."

What would you say is the most iconic Reykjavik food, and where can we try it?

"The most iconic food in Reykjavik, and probably Iceland, is the Icelandic hot dog or “pulsa”, as locals call it. The most famous hot dog stand is located right next to the Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel, Reykjavik. Fast food aside, you can't really go wrong with food in Reykjavik; we recommend trying both the Icelandic lamb and the cod."

Which Reykjavik festivals do you particularly recommend?

Reykjavik Pride, which takes place during the second week of August, is amazing! The celebrations run from Tuesday to Sunday, culminating in Saturday's Pride Parade. Pink Iceland also offers a package for a small winter pride event called Rainbow Reykjavik, which is worth checking out.
