I cannot describe what a wonderful experience this was.
First of all, I loved the location. It was within walking distance of the city centre and I walked everywhere - Syntagma was only about a 25-minute walk away. There is a metro station (Victoria) close to the hotel as well. The hotel overlooks Pedion Areos, and I enjoyed the green view from my hotel window.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They advised me on how to navigate public transport (note that Athens does not have contactless payment on buses and you usually need to buy tickets beforehand from a metro station). They directed me to the nearest supermarket. They were always available for room service, which we ordered in a couple of times.
The breakfast was delicious. Staff were always smiling and honestly provided such a cheerful start to our day. There were cooked and continental options. Two things I absolutely loved were the poached eggs and the rice pudding (yes, a weird combination - what can I say about my palate). There were the usual options: scrambled eggs, sausages, poached salmon, potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, waffles and pancakes (with Nutella or maple syrup toppings). They also had fruit, bougatsa, slices of cheese and ham, pains au chocolat, croissants, two types of bread rolls and fresh orange juice. Quite frankly you could subsist on the breakfast for the rest of the day.
But no! The hotel also boasts an incredible rooftop terrace called St'Astra (to the stars), which you must try! We visited both the cafe and the restaurant. Everything we tried was magnificent, but I do recommend the green seafood risotto, the mushroom orzo with parmesan and the apple pie. The cafe also does an incredible Angus beef burger and a divine (and enormous) brownie with ice cream. The view from the terrace of Athens and the Acropolis was mesmerising and they even had binoculars you could look through to see the Acropolis better. Staff continued to be friendly and helpful. Prices are a little on the expensive side (EUR 14 for the brownie, EUR 25 for the seafood risotto, for example), but in my view it was totally worth it. The chef is very talented.
The rooms were on the larger side and very very clean. The beds were comfortable and so were the pillows. Towels, bathrobes, slippers and toiletries were provided and replenished where necessary.
The one thing that could be very slightly improved are the lifts, which clatter alarmingly at times and were out of order on occasion during our stay.
I would highly, highly recommend this hotel and cannot wait to be back.
