Moderna Museet Malmö

This contemporary museum offers an art experience that is unique for Malmö and the Öresund region. Forming part of the state-owned Moderna Museet that was originally established in Stockholm, visitors can view independent exhibition programs from a variety of artists. The museum opened in 2009 and the main building is located on a converted electricity power plant—making it a standout attraction and meeting place in the area.

Contemporary art

Moderna Museet Malmö offers exciting art experiences and opportunities with exhibition spaces, galleries, and studio workshops. With its independent exhibition programs, in collaboration with Moderna Museet Stockholm and international collaborators, this modern museum showcases some of the contemporary art world’s most important artists. The exhibitions change regularly with modern art classics alternated with selections from Moderna Museet’s diverse collection, accumulated from 1900 onwards. Moderna Museet Malmö also offers engaging learning programs in its exhibition spaces and offers a children’s studio, to cater for artists of all ages.

Unique architecture

The design and planning of the museum used the industrial architecture of the former electricity plant as a starting point to develop this distinctive building. The aim was to create a new art museum with an informal and experimental character to complement the main Moderna Museet museum in Stockholm. Visitors can marvel at the unique perforated exterior façade that provides visual depth and allows natural daylight to screen through. Inside the museum, two staircases allow easy access between the grand turbine hall and the exhibition rooms. The art studios and cafeteria also benefit from the striking contemporary design.
