Take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen and enjoy magnificent views of Bergen and great facilities within a six minute journey. The funicular railway is one of Norway's most famous attractions, starting from Bergen city center. It leaves 150 meters from the Fish Market and Bryggen and only a 10-minute walk to the lower station from where the cruise ships dock. Taking the line is a convenient and fun way to climb the 320m peak. The funicular runs daily from early morning until 11 p.m. during most of the year. You can buy your tickets at the Tourist Information Office in Bergen or at the ticket office in the bottom station.
The Fløibanen line was built in 1918 and consists of a single track with a central passing loop. The line is 844m long and covers a height difference of 302m. The track has a gradient that varies between 15 and 26 degrees. There are two cars, each of which can carry 100 passengers and the cars are individually named and painted, with "Blåmann" in blue and "Rødhette" in red. Today, the line carries over 1.8 million passengers a year and has modern carriages with glass ceilings and panoramic windows which allow wonderful views, and offer easy accessibility for strollers and wheelchair users. The track has six stops and is frequently used by locals living up on the mountain side as well as two kindergartens on the mountain. During the summer and rush hours only certain departures will stop at all stops. The journey up to Fløyen takes about 5–8 minutes.
Views and walks
Admire stunning views of Bergen and the surrounding fjord and mountain landscape from the viewing platform 320m high on the top of Fløyen. This stunning photo and selfie opportunity is not to be missed. The upper station is, of course, also the ideal starting point for exploring the mountains around Bergen. The summit of Mount Fløyen is an excellent walking area offering a wide variety of footpaths, walking paths, trails and viewpoints. You can walk from løyen to Mount Ulriken. This hike is called Vidden and is one of Bergen's most popular mountain hikes. You can walk in either direction and the hike takes approximately five hours. Places for open fires, stone-built barbecues and picnic huts are also provided at the top of the mount. The Fløistuen Shop and Café are great places to stop in for a quick bite and a coffee as well as souvenirs. The Fløien Folkerestaurant is open seasonally and there's also a fantastic children's playground. In summer, various activities are arranged on Fløyen such as treasure hunts, mountain biking, guided tours, zipline, canoeing and fishing.
