Art, design, and modern architecture in Aarhus

Aarhus is one of Scandinavia's most creative cities. At ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Olafur Eliasson's Your rainbow panorama circles the rooftop, giving you color-filled views over the city.

On the Aarhus Ø docklands, the jagged white Iceberg apartments and Dokk1, the city's waterfront library, show off contemporary Danish design.

In the center, Aarhus City Hall, designed by Arne Jacobsen, is a classic of Danish modernism. Godsbanen, a former freight yard, now hosts studios, workshops, and events.

History and Viking heritage in Aarhus

Aarhus began as a Viking settlement called Aros more than 1,000 years ago. Today, its history comes to life in museums across the city.

Moesgaard Museum, just south of the center, tells the story of Denmark's prehistory and Viking age. Its grass-covered roof is also a popular place to sit and enjoy the view.

At Den Gamle By, named European Museum of the Year 2026, you can walk through Danish towns from 1864, 1927, 1974, and 2014. In the Latin Quarter, Aarhus Cathedral's medieval frescoes add another layer of history.

Food and drink in Aarhus: New Nordic and Danish dishes

Aarhus has a strong food scene for its size, from Michelin-recognized restaurants to relaxed food halls.

For a taste of Danish tradition, try smørrebrød, open sandwiches on rye bread topped with fish, meat, or vegetables. Bakeries across the city serve cinnamon swirls and other Danish pastries.

New Nordic restaurants focus on seasonal, local ingredients from Jutland's farms and coast. In the evening, sample local craft beer, or enjoy coffee and cake in one of the Latin Quarter's cafes.
