Turning Torso

Malmö’s Turning Torso is a neo-futurist residential skyscraper and towering at 190 meters high, is the second tallest building in Scandinavia. The project was completed in 2005 and the intriguing building consists of nine segments forming a total of 54 floors and features a 90 degree twist from the base to the top.

Architectural design

This magnificent building was designed by renowned Spanish architect, structural engineer, and sculptor Santiago Calatrava. The Turning Torso is based on one of his sculpture works “The Twisting Torso”—a white marble work that represented the shape of a twisting human body. Constructed of asymmetrical shapes, the Turning Torso skyscraper is divided into nine cubes of five-story pentagons, which rotate as the height increases. A steel exoskeleton connects the segments together resulting in a stunning architectural feat.

Waterfront location

Visits can be arranged to upper floors of the building to marvel at the building’s construction and the outside surrounding areas. While in the area, make sure to stroll around the Western Harbour to view the Turning Torso and the other modern architecture in the area from ground level. The nearby bay and Ribersborg Beach can also be accessed easily.
