The Nodvegen strait gave Norway its name. Learn about the kings and chieftains that controlled this "North Way" shipping lane for 3000 years at Nordvegen History Centre.
What to see at the museum
At this history center you can learn about the rulers of the coast of Norway from Avaldsnes. You'll discover historic exhibits and archaeological discoveries along with insight gleaned from sagas and old songs. Learn about how the village of Avaldsnes became the First Royal Throne of Norway. You can also find out about the more magical beliefs that were once held: hear about the world of sorcerers and Norse gods.
Nordvegen History Centre is mostly located underground, to ensure it does not overshadow the nearby church or the surrounding landscape. Watch films, check out artifacts and other objects, and become immersed in the museum's sound clips and lighting techniques. The souvenir shop sells local literature, as well as locally produced goods like mittens, socks, or Viking jewelry. Grab a bite to eat at the café.
You can book guided tours of Nordvegen History Centre along with nearby attractions like St. Olav's Church and the Viking farm.
Events and activities in the area
Sign up for a tour of the nearby Viking farm. Groups will start from the Nordvegen History Centre and walk 15-20 minutes to the farm. Explore a Viking boathouse among other buildings, a beautiful farmyard, and forest trails. It's a great way to round out a day of historic exploration.
Stop by St. Olav's church to see an impressive historic building built around 1250 AD. Check out the 7.2-meter tall stone dubbed "Virgin Mary's needle."
Check the Nordvegen History Centre's calendar to see if your visit coincides with any special events like the Viking Festival or Medieval Day.
The Viking Festival occurs in the first full week of June each year and has become the largest Viking Festival in Norway's west coast. It takes place at the Viking farm, where over 200 Vikings from across Europe live in tents on the property. Viking fights and other re-enactments take place, and Viking crafts and food are sold. Try out archery, listen to storytellers, go horseback riding, and more.
