Lake Como

Lake Como, an idyllic retreat north of Milan, has been a favorite summer getaway for the affluent for years and makes a great day trip when visiting Milan. Located on the foothill of the Bergamo Alps, the region is home to spectacular scenery and a myriad of activities. The shores of the Y-shaped lake are dotted with picturesque resort towns, each with its own unique charm.

The beautiful region and its towns

Lake Como has a number of features that regularly draw visitors to its banks. You can enjoy a boat ride on the picturesque lake or go for a hike and enjoy some breathtaking views along the way. If you prefer to travel in comfort while enjoying spectacular views, take the cable car from the charming, Renaissance town of Como to the village of Brunate. The short journey of seven minutes is a fun experience not to be missed. When in Brunate, walk around the village admiring the opulent villas and spectacular views from multiple vantage points.

If you travel to the area by train, then you are likely to start your trip from Varenna with its tiny and quaint train station. The train station here is shorter than the train itself. So, be prepared to hop off the train as it comes to a stop. After exploring the romantic town with a walkway looping through it, take a ferry and head out to the famous town of Bellagio with its quaint charm. Take your pick from the towns Tremezzo, Lenno, and Cernobbio if you want to admire some of the famous villas of the region or visit the beautiful town of Mennagio to admire its medieval ruins. For those who are not so familiar with the area, information on routes and maps can be found at the tourist office in Menaggio.

Celebrity spotting and more

A favorite among the rich and famous, Lake Como is loved by fans of the famous people who frequent the region. With international celebrities, such as Madonna and George Clooney, owning villas in the region—celebrity spotting is an actual possibility when visiting Lake Como. If you don’t happen to spot any famous people on your trip, the beauty of the region makes up for it. The area is also famous for being the location for many popular movies and shows. So, don’t be surprised when some villas or squares seem strangely familiar. Water sports enthusiasts can indulge in a variety of water sports on the lake, including sailing diving, rowing, kitesurfing, and more.
