The many facets of the square

The main focal point on the east side of the square is the Old Royal Palace, which is currently home to the Greek Parliament. The building is not open to the public, but you can explore the surrounding National Garden or watch the hourly changing of the guard ceremony. The eastern side also contains marble steps that are used as a popular meeting spot; the metro station is located underneath them.

From the west side of Syntagma Square, you can access Ermou, the pedestrian shopping street. There's also Public, a major shopping center with technology and entertainment products.

On the north side of the square, you'll see the famous Hotel Grande Bretagne—a building with a storied history and a great place to stop for coffee. There are also plenty of restaurant and shopping options nearby.

From Syntagma Square's south side, cross Orthonos Street and turn the corner onto Leoforos Vasilisis Amalias. You'll find Syntagma Station, where you can hop on the tram system and explore more of Athens.

The north and south sections of the square contain green areas for visitors to enjoy, while the center of the square features a large fountain. Major events are held in this square, from political rallies to lighthearted festivals. You may even catch a local protest, as the square is a popular spot for all sorts of demonstrations. Seasonal entertainment includes Christmas lights and décor and a massive New Year's Eve concert. Kids will enjoy feeding the pigeons which seem to be always present in the square.
