Get your cultural fix at this renovated 16th-century arsenal, which hosts music and theater productions, as well as art exhibitions. Kulturhaus Reitstadel is situated in Neumarkt's Residenzplatz, in the middle of the ensemble of the former Count Palatine, the ballrooms of the residence and of the court chapel. The building is famous throughout Europe as a concert hall with outstanding acoustics, but has had a dramatic past.
The history of Reistadel dates back to the 15th century as a storehouse for cereals and animal fodder. It burned down in 1520, and in 1538 was restored by Count Palatine Friedrich II as a storage place for weapons and machinery of the Count Palatine Court. The impressive box building was given the name "Reitstadel" in the 9th century when it was used as a riding hall. In April 1945 it was destroyed during an American air raid on Neumarkt. After years of discussion, the 500 year old building was rebuilt from its ruins to become a cultural center. The exterior of the building retained its historic authenticity, but a modern extension was added and the interior redesigned completely, including a magnificent concert hall.
Popular concert and recording venue
Today, the Reitstadel has a new purpose as a cultural center with a wide range of music, theater and exhibitions. So far, more than 1000 events have taken place in the concert hall and nearly 500 in the foyer, with a great variety of artistic performances ranging from classical chamber music to modern experimental music. The concert hall, which seats 462 people, is considered a marvel of acoustics and can be used for conferences or lectures. The perfect complement is the atmospheric foyer on the ground floor, which has hosted many art exhibitions and is a simply perfect atmosphere for presentations or catering events. The venue has also hosted a number of successful recordings with renowned artists, from well-known companies such as Sony, BMG and Philips. There are two excellent Steinway-D piano areas available. These instruments are particularly popular with pianists for recordings and concerts because of their individual quality. Whether visiting the Reitstadel for a concert, exhibition or theater performance, you'll find the unique atmosphere of this historic building a memorable surprise on your visit to Neumarkt. The theater is highly accessible, with many parking spaces available in the underground car park and a spacious lift which allows wheelchair users easy access to the hall.
