The Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe houses 2 museums, 3 research centers as well as a media center. It offers visitors a plentitude of thematic events and exhibitions, guided tours and educational programs, all within the field of new media. Experience the ZKM Karlsruhe as an individual or in a group as part of a guided tour during the annual open house day or "KAMUNA" night (Karlsruhe night of museums). Education and research are focal points at the Center of Art and Media Technology: the center forges close links with universities and further institutions in order to be actively involved in the development of future education. Therefore, e.g. the Institute for Media, Education and Economy is located in the ZKM, being focused on the opening up of new perspectives for television, the fathoming of the potential of new communication technologies and the investigation of the interplay of new media and economy. The ZKM Karlsruhe makes a large contribution to the infrastructure of the technology region of Karlsruhe.
Media Museum in the ZKM
The Media Museum is unique, offering its visitors interactive art. Participate in an interactive movie, discover the cyberspace or simply experience, how the new games culture and media art conglomerate in the "world of games". The aim of the center is to accelerate the creative possibilities of connection between the traditional forms of art and the new media technologies, to anticipate for the future. ZKM's goal is to orient towards digital technologies like various kinds of visual and acoustic media, electronic music, laser, video and video animation.
History of the Center
Founded in the early 1980s, in the beginning, the center was located in various building around the city. Based on plans designed by Hamburg office of Schweger, a munitions factory had been converted as well as the extension of the Media Cube section started to take shape in 1993. Over the following years, different buildings such as a media theater, concert and events spaces, a media center, studios and institutes for research and production, a media museum and a Museum of Contemporary Art have been integrated into the ZKM.
