Famous for its old university, Gottingen boasts art nouveau architecture and plenty of traditions echoing the walls of its old streets. The University of Georgia-Augusta was founded in 1734 by George II of England; it is the oldest in Lower Saxony and one of the best in the world. It has a botanical garden dating back to the same date—one of the largest in Germany with an important collection of plants. The town hall is centuries old and has a famous statue of a girl with a goose, who is said to be the most kissed in the world.
