Learn all about the history of rural life in Belgium in this unique park and open-air museum complex. Bokrijk displays a large collection of historical buildings from across Flanders, nestled in the green forest. More than a hundred authentic buildings paint a fascinating picture of how people lived in the Flemish countryside of the past.
Revisit 1913 in the rural setting of Flanders. Actors play the parts of villagers and give you a glimpse of how life was more than 100 years ago. You can hear a priest give a sermon or see a class being taught. If you want to take a memory back home, get photographed in period costumes. Enjoy traditional Flemish games at one of the barns or take a ride on horse cart. For something a little more recent, step back to the swinging sixties—with typical interiors complete with iconic album covers and clips from TV shows and festivals of the time. Be impressed by the craftsmanship by watching demonstrations, or even have a go at making something yourself in one of the workshops and take an original handmade souvenir home with you. These workshops give you an insight into how things were made and processed back in the days. There are many types of workshops including woodworking, leather processing, pottery, bread making, and other craftsmanship. Check the website of the open-air museum for schedules.
The beautiful arboretum, with one of the largest plant collections in Belgium, is located near the gate. It is a wonder to explore and provides a perfect backdrop for your photos. If you want to have some more active fun, hire a cycle and go on a bike ride through water along a cycling path that has made its way into Time magazine's top 100 beautiful places in the world. The 3-meter wide cycle path is 200 meters long and cuts through water to give you a feeling of riding on water.
Almost everything in the open-air museum is a fun experience for the kids. But if they still want more, head to the huge outdoor playground with slides, swings, a climbing net, cars, miniature golf, and even a toddler town. Before you leave, visit the sweet shop for a delightful end to a fun family day.
The park is easily accessible by nearby bus stops. Bokrijk is a unique, off-the-beaten-track day trip not to be missed.
