Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, yet it packs a powerful punch. Mesmerising Muscat sits right on the glittering Gulf of Oman, surrounded by mountains and desert. This gem of a city mixes stylish modern living with ancient history. Modern Duqm arose from a vision for the twenty-first century. Previously a quiet fish-ing village, the Omani's rebuilt it in 2011 as a one-of-a-kind new economic zone and seaport. Less than a decade later, the village has vanished, replaced by the chic ho-tels, restaurants, and stores of a bustling metropolitan economic centre. Duqm is ex-panding by the day, but its traditional major features – the stunning natural rock gar-den of wind-eroded shapes and wonderful beaches – have been carefully protected.

A stylish, thriving coastal city has grown up around the port at Sohar – gateway to the Gulf of Oman. Sohar is now a vibrant and popular resort, full of sophisticated beach life, with great swimming, watersports, shopping and restaurants.
