House of the Black Heads

The House of the Black Heads was built in 1334 as a meeting place for various public organizations in Riga. At that time, it was the most luxurious and prestigious building in the entire city.

The Black Heads, an association of young, unmarried merchants, goldsmiths, and ship captains, became the tenants of this building at the end of the 15th century.

Unfortunately, the building was destroyed during the Second World War, but in 1999 the House of the Black Heads was rebuilt and regained its former glory.

Today, a visit to the building is a journey through the centuries, including the building’s architecturally glorious façade, newly built halls, and banquet rooms, as well as the preserved historic cellars of the original building.

Latvian Railway History Museum

The Latvian Railway History Museum provides a rich insight into railway history in Latvia and boasts the largest collection of broad-gauge railway objects in the Baltics, including 47 locomotives, wagons, drays, and other types of railway equipment.

Visitors are also particularly drawn to the largest model railway layout in the Baltics, where trains cross bridges and level crossings on 44 square meters of track before stopping at a station to set off again.

The museum also offers visitors the chance to take a special hand-cranked train for a unique ride on the tracks.

Āgenskalns Market

Open since 1898, the Āgenskalns Market is not only the largest, but also the oldest market on the left bank of the Daugava.

Its outstanding architectural design was created under the direction of Riga’s chief architect Reinhold Schmaeling. It serves as a gathering place for locals, where farmers and home producers come together to offer fresh and quality products on the ground floor.

On the second floor, a real gourmet’s delight awaits visitors, with restaurants and cozy cafés inviting them to enjoy culinary excellence.

National Library of Latvia

Opposite the Old Town, on the left bank of the Daugava, rises the new Latvian National Library building, one of the most significant cultural and scientific buildings in Latvia.

Its form includes metaphors and references to a famous Latvian play called the Golden Horse, depicting a glass mountain or a symbolic Castle of Light.

Visitors to the National Library have the opportunity to explore a variety of themed reading rooms with books, periodicals, audio and video recordings—some of them very rare.

The building blends the traditional role of a classical library with that of a modern cultural and information center, hosting conferences, festivals, and a wide range of thematic exhibitions.
