We have established 4 Base Stations located in different areas to cover different weather conditions. You can enjoy access to a warm shelter (a traditional lavvo tent or a heated and cozy building), toilet facilities, campfires, and outdoor benches. A local host at each base can share many stories about the local culture and history.
The system with Base Stations is unique and was developed by Tromsø Safari. Every afternoon around 17:30, we choose the Base Station with the best weather prospects and thus the best opportunity to see the Northern Lights. We use the weather forecast, the wind direction, and current weather reports from the hosts at the Base Stations to guide our decision. We also rely on our experience, which encompasses more than 15 years and over 2,500 Aurora tours, when choosing the best site.
If the weather changes and some clouds move in, we will contact our network to find out whether it would be better to move to another location. If so, we will eat our meals and start to drive toward a different area. In these circumstances, we will not go to another Base Station, but will stay along the nearby roads searching for a clear sky. We travel using comfortable coaches, and every coach has an on-board toilet and a dedicated guide.
When the weather is clear, it is best to stay in one spot, preferably one of the Base Stations.
