Organ Stop Pizza

Be fed and thoroughly entertained at this pizza restaurant with a difference.

Organ Stop Pizza, a restaurant located in Mesa, Arizona, has what it claims is the largest Wurlitzer theater organ in the world. Powered by three turbine blowers (with a fourth as a standby) this stellar attraction has more than 5,500 pipes. The original organ was built for the Denver Theater and was rebuilt in 1975, using pieces from other Wurlitzers. The restaurant is a frequent recipient of Phoenix New Times annual "Best of Phoenix" awards. Over 7.3 million people have dined while listening to the organ maestros play at the Organ Stop.

History of the Organ Stop

The first Organ Stop Pizza restaurant opened in 1972 in Phoenix, Arizona. It had a Wurlitzer pipe organ which was originally built for Grauman's Hollywood Egyptian Theater. This unique concept of a pizza parlor with a pipe organ was thought of by a Phoenix real estate developer, whose enthusiasm for the theater pipe organ and its music led to the creation of this landmark attraction. The success of the Phoenix restaurant led to the 1975 opening of another Organ Stop in Mesa.

It opened near the corner of Dobson and Southern Avenue with a Wurlitzer organ from the Denver Theater in Denver, Colorado. In the theater, the instrument had 15 ranks, or sets of pipes, but the instrument was rebuilt and enlarged to 23 ranks for its debut in the new Mesa Organ Stop. The Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa became as popular as the Phoenix restaurant, which was eventually sold in 1984. The Mesa Organ Stop, under new ownership, began to improve their pipe organ. Rare pipework and percussions were added, culminating in what is believed to be the largest Wurlitzer pipe organ in the world.

Eventually, the restaurant would become so popular that they needed a larger facility, which they moved into in 1995. A delicious slice of Wurlitzer Today, Organ Stop Pizza and its Wurlitzer are known far and wide by theater organists, enthusiasts and lovers of pizza, hundreds of thousands of whom visit each year, including a number of famous faces. There are continuing efforts to make additions and improvements to the organ, endeavoring to fine tune the instrument closer and closer to perfection.
