Aberdeen Centre: Part of the community for more than 30 years
The center was built as an alternative to Chinatown in Vancouver and its enclosed layout was a totally new concept when it was built in 1989. It was built to cater for the growing population of skilled Asian immigrants who had moved to Richmond since 1984. This comprehensive shopping center was named after Hong Kong's famous harbor, Aberdeen.
At the time of construction it was the largest enclosed Asian retail center in North America, but would be overtaken by rival malls such as Yaohan Centre and President Plaza. In 2001 the mall was demolished and rebuilt two years later three times the size of the original and at a cost of around $130 million. The neighborhood around the Aberdeen Centre has developed into the "Aberdeen District."
