A united central market
The market in Belo Horizonte was started in September 1929, when several existing fairs were united in a plot of 22 lots near Plaza Raul Soares. In this 14,000 square meters of land, the mayor Cristiano Machado ensured wooden tents were created, supplied by carts carrying the produce. Then called Mercado Municipal, the market thrived until 1964, when the mayor of the time decided to sell the land. However, the merchants organized and bought the property from City Hall. The land was then enclosed with a covered shed and the market expanded its activities to sell not just foods, but crafts also.
